A Day of Care – turning your generosity into care, one patient at a time.
What is a
Day of Care?
Through our Day of Care programme, you can fund one full day of care for a patient in our Inpatient Unit, where they receive everything from specialised medical support to emotional and spiritual care for both them and their loved ones.
When you fund a Day of Care, you’re not just supporting a patient to live their
final days with comfort, dignity, and love – you’re helping ensure our community continues to have access to the compassionate care that Waipuna Hospice provides every day.
Help us make time count
When you’re terminally ill, your number one wish is to remain at home where you feel the most comfortable and relaxed.
But sometimes, pain and symptoms become too much to manage at home, which is where our Inpatient Unit (IPU) provides much-needed support, pain management, and relief and respite for both patients and their families.
While our care is free to access, it is not free to provide. With only 43% of our operating costs covered by Te Whatu Ora, we are tasked with raising the funds so we can continue to provide care to everyone who needs it.
Day of Care is one of our newest fundraising initiatives, where we are asking supporters to fund a Day of Care for a patient in our Inpatient Unit.
On average, it costs $1,950 per patient, per day in our IPU.
Not all Waipuna Hospice patients will require an inpatient admission, but the service is available at any time for pain management, symptom control, and end-of-life care. IPU is a special place where patients receive the highest level of care.
This includes…
- Care from our team of nurses, doctors, social workers, and family support staff.
- Counselling, massage therapy, and spiritual guidance.
- Spacious private rooms with an ensuite and outdoor patio.
- Electric bed with pressure-relieving mattress and capacity for a family member to stay on a fold-down bed.
- Air-conditioning, Freeview TV, and free Wi-Fi.
- All meals prepared by an on-site cook.
- Family kitchen and lounge areas available for family/whanau, as well as free parking.
Care and comfort made possible by you
When one of our patients spend a day in our Inpatient Unit here at Waipuna Hospice, it’s a day that brings relief.
Relief from their pain and symptoms, and a breath of relief for their family.
A simple act of care that says so much
This is a tangible, meaningful way to give back and to show your team, your customers, and your community that your business stands for something deeply human: care, compassion, and connection.
Choose a day with meaning to you
Your Day of Care can take place on any date you choose. Many people choose a day that holds special significance – a loved one’s birthday, an anniversary, or a day with personal meaning. It’s a beautiful way to connect your story to the care you’re making possible.
You’re helping us make time count
With your help, we can ensure that every patient and their family get to have all the things we would want for our own family: fun, togetherness, laughter, tears, joy, and at the end, comfort and peace.
Your Day of Care could be the most important day ever for a family.
Your day could be their most precious day.
When being together is what matters most.
“Outside Dad’s IPU room stood a calm, gentle horse, just like the ones he grew up with. The grandkids took turns riding, their laughter filling the air. Two days later, he passed, but that moment is a core memory I will never forget, a lasting memory for us all, we loved it and Dad loved it.”
– The time a horse came to visit Alan at hospice.
As told by daughter Stephanie.

Why we gift a
Day of Care
At Artisans Roofing, we believe it takes a community to support one another – and that’s how we all thrive. No one truly knows when they or someone they love may need the incredible care that Waipuna Hospice provides.
Our business is all about supplying quality roofs, but one way we can give back to the community that supports us is by donating ‘A Day of Care’ to Waipuna Hospice. Through our connection with BNI, we’ve seen firsthand the vital role the hospice plays – offering compassion, dignity, and support to people living with a life-limiting illness, and to the families walking alongside them during such a difficult time.
“For us, choosing to support Waipuna Hospice was a no brainer. We’re proud to stand with such a wonderful cause and encourage others to do the same. Together, our community can make a real and lasting difference.”
3 reasons why you should gift a Day of Care
ONE: You’ll be supporting a vital, unique service in our community
Waipuna Hospice is the only dedicated specialist palliative care service across the whole of Tauranga and the western Bay of Plenty.
We need to raise 57% of our operating expenses ($8.4m) from donations gifted from our community to ensure our care remains free and accessible for everyone.
TWO: You can honour a loved one’s memory or a significant day
Often, people or businesses select a specific day and dedicate it to someone special.
Many people choose a day that holds special significance – a loved one’s birthday, an anniversary, or a day with personal meaning. It’s a beautiful way to connect your story to the care you’re making possible.
THREE: It’s your chance to help change someone’s life
Of course, the best reason to gift a Day of Care is the knowledge that you will be bringing the best possible care and support to our patients when it matters most.
With your help, we can ensure that every day they have is lived well with all the things we would want for our own family; fun, togetherness, laughter, tears, joy and peace.
