Who can get care from
Waipuna Hospice?
We provide interdisciplinary specialist palliative care for patients alongside the care provided by their GP and specialist teams. Here’s a general idea:
- Patients with a serious illness that can’t be cured (or who choose not to receive treatment).
- Patients with complex issues like pain management, emotional distress, social problems, or spiritual concerns.
- Patients who need more support than their primary doctor can provide.
- Patients with NZ residency or reciprocal rights and a local GP
- Patients under 18 with paediatric specialist support (if applicable).
- Patients with non malignant disease must have proof of end-stage disease (if applicable).

Waipuna Hospice offers extensive training programs in palliative care for staff, volunteers, and health professionals. Since 2011, we have been accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians to provide specialist training for medical registrars.

Fundamentals of Palliative Care
The Fundamentals of Palliative Care is a series of learning packages designed for any health care worker – registered and non-registered – who are caring for people with a palliative care need.
HNZ Syringe Driver Full Competency Training
To assist Registered Nurses to obtain the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills they require to manage syringe drivers in their place of practice and for enrolled nurses to be competent in checking.
Which Dressing for which Palliative Wound?
This workshop will focus on: How we navigate through the vast array of dressing products, Examining wound assessment tools, Classifying different dressings, and case studies to help us put the learning into practice.
Wound Management in Palliative Care Workshop
This workshop will focus on: Addressing wound care challenges in the palliative care setting, Understanding a holistic approach to wound care, and more.
Palliative Care for Health Care Assistants
This course includes the following modules: Introduction to Palliative Care, Symptom Assessment & Management, Communication Skills for Supporting Patients and Family/Whānau; and Last Days of Life.
Palliative Care Study Day: Delivering Compassionate Care Together
Delivering Compassionate Care Together. A one-day education session navigating some common physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of palliative care.
